In a world grappling with rapid changes and challenges, fostering an inclusive workplace has never been more pertinent. It’s an issue underscored by the theme of International Women’s Day 2024 – Inspiring Inclusion. In this instalment of our series dedicated to continued conversations around the theme of inclusion, we shed light on the insights of Zainab (Zi) Djama.

The Stepping Stones of Success

Zi‘s professional growth within ReadyTech Workforce Solutions is a testimonial to her expertise and commitment. Joining the team as a Professional Services Consultant in early 2023, it didn’t take long for her to progress to her current role of Implementation Consultant. This crucial role entails the oversight of customer transitions, ensuring the smooth integration of services.

Inclusion vs. Diversity: Zainab’s Take

When asked about her views on inclusion, Zi emphasises the discrepancy between inclusion and diversity. A common oversight in many organisations, she observes, is the conflation of the two, which can often result in the perception of tokenism to shield an image, rather than implementing meaningful change.

“Inclusion to me is providing equal opportunities to employees by implementing actionable internal processes that provide career development opportunities as well as fostering an inclusive culture within the organisation,” asserts Zi. According to her, effective inclusion starts from the top, setting an example for all.

She adds, “It’s been amazing seeing all the women leaders in the WFS division.”

Tackling Pay Discrimination Head-on

Globally pay discrimination remains a formidable barrier in the workplace, and Zi openly addresses this issue. “The gender pay gap is a well-known phenomenon,” she states, and it’s even more pronounced for women who are part of minority groups.

Strategies for Real Inclusion

Zi believes that true inclusion requires leaders who are more than just vocal advocates. Instead, they should “lead by actions.” She also suggests inclusion involves understanding other cultures and fostering respect, not merely learning about them from a safe distance.

“To work on inclusion is as important as it is for leaders to spot employees that are being excluded,” Zi proposes. Only through such vigilant and proactive leadership can inclusion truly be woven into the fabric of company culture.

The Call to Inspire Inclusion

The essence of Zi’s message aligns perfectly with International Women’s Day 2024 – to inspire and foster inclusion at every level. Through her experiences, insights, and expertise, we’re reminded of the critical role leadership plays in creating an environment where every individual has the opportunity to thrive. It’s a lofty goal that is both necessary and achievable, one step at a time.

ReadyTech Workforce Solutions applauds the commitment and push for inclusion that Zi stands for and will continue the conversation to ensure every day is a stride towards Inspiring Inclusion.
